Bay Meadows race dates decided [despite its refusal to install synthetic turf]
By Michelle Durand
Horse racing officials have settled a 2008 race date schedule, paving the way for races at Bay Meadows race track in San Mateo despite its refusal to install synthetic turf.
San Mateo County Fair officials met the announcement with relief, after earlier worries that the annual event would lose attendance and money without horse racing as a draw.
“It's wonderful to have the dates. They will give us the revenue we need to support the fair. It wouldn't be the same without them,” said San Mateo County Supervisor Jerry Hill who sits on the fair board.
The California Horse Racing Board must still approve the calendar which includes dates during the annual August fair. The proposed schedule includes 70 races at Bay Meadows and 120 races at Golden Gate Fields in Albany . The dates are Aug. 6 to Aug. 18, starting slightly before the beginning of the 2008 fair.
Earlier this year, it looked unlikely Bay Meadows would have any race dates at all. The CHRB mandated in 2006 all racing associations with four weeks or more of continuous racing have a synthetic surface to be granted a license in 2008. Hollywood Park , also owned by Bay Meadows Land Company, already installed the new track. Del Mar is in the process and both Golden Gate Fields and Santa Anita are planning to install it this year. ...

BWI to try artificial turf along runways
Synthetic grass could reduce
maintenance costs, bird strikes
By GRANT HUANG
Staff Writer
Published August 28, 2007
The green stuff lining runways at BWI Thurgood Marshall Airport may not be grass a year from now.
Airport officials are planning to replace 27,150 square feet of real grass at two intersecting runways with a special artificial turf designed for airports.
'The goal is to see how the turf performs compared to regular grass,' said Cheryl Stewart , a BWI spokesman. 'If the turf is durable enough, it may save maintenance because we won't have to cut grass in the (test) area.'
Regular grass must be mowed by airport staff about once a month. During the mowing, runways must be shut down, so the work is usually scheduled late at night when flight volume is low.

Fake Turf the New Reality for Sport
The Age
Dan Silkstone
September 8, 2007
THE AFL and Cricket Australia have joined forces to search for a new form of artificial turf suitable for Australia's drought-stricken summer and winter sports.
As experts warned this week there was no end in sight to the worst dry in memory, country and suburban clubs face another summer of hard, dusty ovals and Australian sporting life looks set for a big culture shock.
Synthetic turf, long a fixture of American sports such as gridiron and baseball, has never gained a foothold in cricket or football. That is likely to change as the country's top sporting administrators plan to convert country and suburban grounds to plastic grass.

Westport Rec Dept. OKs Synthetic Turf Fields
Westport Minute Man . com
By:Bonnie Adler, Staff Writer 09/06/2007
The Westport Parks and Recreation Department said this week that continued use of synthetic athletic turf fields in Westport is warranted despite concerns expressed by some saying they may adversely affect the health of users.
In a statement, Parks and Recreation Director Stuart McCarthy said, "The Westport Parks and Recreation Department continues to support the installation of synthetic athletic turf as a safe alternative to grass playing fields.
"While we are constantly reviewing all available information on this subject we have seen no evidence that playing on these fields is unsafe. There is ample evidence that these fields perform well, use fewer pesticides and improve playing conditions and athlete safety over the current over-used grass fields."

Turf Testing A Waste Of Time, Money
By Mike DiMauro , Day Assistant Sports Editor
The Day.com
Published on 9/6/2007
YOU ARE ABOUT TO HEAR from four local college athletes, two of whom major in environmental studies, who spend five afternoons a week playing sports on artificial turf.
You are about to read from a two-year study from a French environmental agency.
You are about to hear from a state epidemiologist, who studies the transmission and control of epidemic diseases.
After you process what they say, we'll discuss whether state attorney general Richard Blumenthal's pledge of $200,000 for additional testing to turf fields is warranted — or just grandstanding for the cameras, all while shielded by the words, “in the name of public safety.”
A primer: Tests conducted at the Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station showed that compounds are being released into the air ....

Seats were hard to come by Wednesday night when aldermen continued discussions on the proposal to install synthetic turf on three of Newton South High School fields.
The proposal – and its many drafts – has drifted in and out of public meetings for the last three years. And votes were postponed yet again so that members of the Public Facilities and Programs and Services committees could digest additional information.

Jefferson City Sports
Unofficial Jefferson City Jays Information - Maintenance
Not sure how maintenance costs truly stack up between natural grass and artificial turf or if there is a point at which one can truly find a better return on investment that would justify artificial turf or not. It could be years before anyone knows who is closer on maintenance estimates, etc. Of course, the first hurdle would come down to the initial cost.
Some info from the news on the artificial turf at our rivals just to the north
(Rock Bridge and Hickman).
From SUNDAY Q&A WITH BRUCE WHITESIDES
Changes on the horizon
By JOE WALLJASPER Tribune sports editor
Published Sunday, August 5, 2007
Q: You've had artificial turf for a year at Rock Bridge and Hickman.
How has that worked out?
A: We made the right decision on the turf. I got a chance to talk to both of my ADs. Well, (Rock Bridge's) Steve Levingston is gone now, but Doug Mirts' records indicated we used it over 1,200 hours, compared to last year, when we had natural grass, to 101 hours. Steve gave me some numbers, I'm not sure how accurate, but approximately 960 hours at Rock Bridge were in use, and the year before on the natural grass we used it 95 or 96 hours. That many participants, that many more class periods out there, yeah, it's a great success. There's some community use for it. People are inquiring about renting it. … When you're land-locked, especially the way they are at Hickman, you can use it for practice and games without worrying about wear and tear. I think it was a great success.

Moratorium, No; Alternatives, Yes
Fairfield Citizen News - CA
Staff Reports
Article Launched: 08/28/2007 12:41:39 PM EDT
The possible health concerns related to the rubber infill (particularly recycled rubber) used in synthetic turf fields have been a cause for alarm in some communities.
As we looked into the infill issue, one thing led to another as we followed a list of possible health concerns such as skin contact, leaching, outgassing and dust. While we haven't come across anything that could be called definitive, further investigation seems prudent when you consider how many children play on these surfaces.

On Playing Fields, [Real] Grass Is an Endangered Species
NY Times
August 13, 2007
David Gonzales
..... Mr. Diaz would like to keep the local fields real. Then again, he has seen nature's niceties give way to the local building boom.
“I used to have a river view in my apartment until they put up another building,” he said. “Look at the shadows on this field. We used to have nice sun in the afternoons until the buildings blocked it off. I'm not crazy about artificial turf, but everything is doable, you know.”
A similar need to increase recreational space across the city has led parks officials to rely on synthetic turf to reclaim bleak asphalt yards or extend the life of scraggly soccer fields. Its proponents also cite its cheaper maintenance costs. .....

Preliminary study urges more study of crumb rubber used in synthetic fields
Athletic Turf News
Aug 19, 2007
A study being described by its authors as a “very modest study” nonetheless
recommends that additional research be conducted on crumb rubber used as
“infill” on synthetic turf sports fields. Targeted for further study are concerns that
volatile chemicals might “out-gas” from the crumb rubber under certain conditions,
and elements may leach from the crumb rubber.
Chemists at the Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station conducted the study,
which was commissioned by the non-profit group Environment and Human Health
Inc. (EHHI), New Haven, CT. EHHI provided $2,000 for the study and also
supplied the crumb rubber samples to be tested, according to report of the study
on the experiment station's Web site.

Crumb Rubber is Now King
July 5, 2006
Ron Hall
Athletic Turf News
Crumb rubber is a staple in the latest generation of outdoor synthetic athletic
fields. Marketers of these “infill” fields point to the addition of the crumb rubber
within the poly fibers (in some cases mixed with sand) as a big improvement over
the previous generation's synthetic fields. They claim the crumb rubber, spread
evenly over the surface of the playing field provides a cushioning effect. The
presence of crumb rubber also make the field“play” more like a turfgrass field,
including more natural ball bounce.
The Web site www.scraptirenes.com defines crumb rubber as any material
derived from reducing scrap tire or other rubber into uniform granules with the
inherent reinforcing materials such as steel and fiber removed along with any other
type of inert contaminants such as dust, glass or rock. Several processes are
used to produce it, and its quality can vary significantly.
Installers of today's synthetic fields use large amounts of crumb rubber, almost a
quarter million pounds per field.
