{ed note: Read this article along with all 44 comments – it speaks volumes for what these issues are generally about – misinformation or misinterpretation of HOA design guidelines and restrictions for local property owners. HOA design guidelines are required to be provided to you PRIOR to your purchasing your property from a developer and should be disclosed to you well before escrow if you are buying a home from the current owner. HOA guidelines can cost any property owner their freedom of choice.

That’s why these guidelines are put into place – HOWEVER – most HOA are run democratically, with wiggle room and the ability to amend their guidelines and bylaws; usually by popular vote.

You, as residents of your community, own your HOA. Check your bylaws about the processes required to put the use of any type of solution to community vote.

Yet, ALWAYS check with your home owner’s association to make sure to include them on any major changes to your landscape; especially when you are required to do so by the guidelines set by the HOA.}

Another installation spoken of in the article is
right next door to a well kept, (wintering) lawn.

In summer, it would be difficult to tell them apart -

to neighbors (the majority either highly in-favor, or
without concerns because the materials are very real
looking, if well installed and of quality grade)
