3 Fieldturf Artificial Turf Fields
Closed Due to Lead Concerns
Officials Waiting For CPSC Assessment Results

Artificial turf fields closed pending further testing – Northern Valley Regional High School District awaits test results from “someone in authority”

“The ongoing debate about the potential health hazard from lead in artificial turf fields, particularly to children, has ensnared the industry’s biggest player: FieldTurf Tarkett.

School administrators in New Jersey closed at least three FieldTurf athletic fields recently, pending further testing. The Northern Valley Regional High School District closed two FieldTurf synthetic fields in Demarest and Old Tappan, says superintendent Jan Furman. The Hasbrouck Heights School District closed one FieldTurf athletic field but decided to keep another open after it received a “clean bill of health,” says superintendent Joseph Luongo.

Hasbrouck Heights is waiting for the results of the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission’s ongoing evaluation of lead in artificial turf, Luongo says, before it decides to reopen the closed field for athletics this fall.

“I decided to close the field until I get something concrete from someone in authority,” Luongo says. “I first went to the New Jersey Department of Health. They referred me to the federal government.”

This marks the first time the Montreal-based company’s fields have been closed. Most of the half-dozen previous closings in New Jersey and New York centered on older, AstroTurf fields. Twenty-two of the NFL’s 32 teams either play or practice on FieldTurf., including the world champion New York Giants and AFC Champion New England Patriots.
